Problem with temps...

bakeaway Nov 25, 2007 07:09 PM

Thought I would post here becuse it seems to get more response.
I have a 6 tub rack system and a prop thermostat. I have it set for 83 F. I just checked it with the temp gun and the back of the tubs read between 89-99 F and the fron read 78. I have the probe next to the heat element.
What could be the problem? Should I move it? I turned it down.
This has not happened before.
Thanks

David

adjust as needed. But check to see if temp gun is right. I'd double check with a small thermometer.

Thanks for getting back to me. I will check temp gun. I also think it might be the lights I have, but they are about 6 inches away from rack. If so then I will switch to a flourescent.
By the way,,nice web page you have.

Actually 89-99 to 78 is not a bad heat gradient. Snakes use those temps in the wild, so why not let them in captivity.
Your snakes will not be forced to have a high of 83, which seems low in my experience. You'll find that during the spring and summer your snakes will spend most of their time on the high side of the rack, instead of getting up to temp on the high side and moving to the medium to cool side as they would in nature.
This is not what nature has designed them to do. You might want to re-think your setup.

Thanks. I checked them again, and the high is right in the very back and it drops to the mei high 80s about an inch away. Then decreases as you get to the front. So it seems fine.
