Question on when to introduce males.

arcanemind Nov 25, 2007 10:14 PM

How long should you cool your males before intorducing them to a female.

I cooled them for 2 weeks at temps b/n 76-80 and have just introduced them to the females. Prior to cooling, I kept them warm for 2 weeks since their last meal to help them digest.

Should i have waited longer? Should i drop the temps more, now that they are paired?

Thanks.

Lots of people don't even bother cooling. As long as they've been off food for a bit, now is as good a time as any to introduce them.

Most breeders never cool their males and have no problems. If both are healthy and love is in the air, that's all it takes.

Thanks for replying. Now that i;ve got the males in with the females, at what temps do most breeders keep them at when first introducing the male?

i know breeding boas is no exact science, but from what I understand, there is a general consensus on how to successfully breed. I'm just trying to figure it all out =)

Thanks for your time and assistance.

"If both are healthy and love is in the air, that's all it takes".

If that statement is true, and I'm not saying it isn't, wouldn't they breed at any time of the yr then?

I think it may depend somewhat on where you are located.

I'm in FLA, I've never cooled them & I've yet to have a pair not
breed.

Yep. Jeff Ronne, the Boaphile (he's also here on the forum) has written numerous times that his boas will mate and produce litters all through the year, and he's in Minnesota, where there are cold winters but normal summers.

Other breeders have also had success year-round, but it seems most breeding takes place in the winter. I imagine the light cycle is more important than temperatures... but people have success breeding boas if they have temps remain the same... some also have good luck cooling them, and some have better luck when they RAISE the temps. Who knows what the right formula is? Definitely not an exact science.
