Mealworms

DeltaWoods Aug 24, 2003 03:38 PM

I am going to be buying mealworms for my leo today and i was wondering how do i take care of these mealworms. Like what should i keep them in, stuff like that. I have flukers cricket food and drink already, could i use that for feeding the mealies? Also, can i feed only mealworms or should i feed both mealworms and crickets? Thanks.

Keep them in the fridge and you can feed them potatoes. Gut Loaded crickets have more nutritional value than mealies, and i would suggest feeding both mealies and crix. Hope this helps!

Unlike crickets Mealworms diets are made up almost completely of grain in the wild so you can give them vegetables for moisture and they will eat some, but a good grain cereal would be better. Some people like to put them in the refrigerator but I have heard that when they go into a hibernation like state they stop eating and there stomachs empty so they lose nutritional value. Crickets are somewhat higher in calcium but a staple diet of mealworms is fine and much more practical due to the cost of small amounts of crickets care of large amounts and the ability to moniter feeding and provide food at all times.

Some people replace the mealworms daily for gut-loading, but I keep them in the bowl with crumbled tropical fish flakes. My leos eat mostly superworms and choose to wait for me to feed them, but they still eat about 2/3 of the mealies in the bowl every night. I'm down to only feeding crickets a few times a month now.

I have been raising mealworms for a short time now, and have been getting good results using the following mix:

Oatmeal (not quick type)
Cornmeal
Whole wheat flour
Rice baby cereal
Powdered milk
Brewers yeast (just a little)
Tropical fish flakes (just a little each day)
Baby carrots (sliced lengthways) for moisture

I dont refrigerate the mealworms, and they grow very fast this way. If you buy in bulk, you may want to experiment with cooling them to slow down growth.
