ST GEORGE & SUTHERLAND SHIRE LEADER (St George, Australia) 20 November 07 Cane toads in the shire
During his five years in Brisbane, Chris Derrick saw plenty of cane toads.
He also learnt the best way to deal with them.
"A five iron was the best," he said. "Enough weight and plenty of loft."
Those five years made Mr Derrick, who now lives at Jannali and works at Caringbah, something of an expert whose advice is valued.
"One of the boys I work with pulled me aside on Wednesday and said: `You've lived in Queensland. Have you ever seen a cane toad?"'
The workmate had hit a big toad with the lawnmower that morning.
"It was a bit mangled but there's no mistaking a cane toad," Mr Derrick said. "A lot of places around our work have materials delivered from Queensland, so it probably just hopped a ride.
"It was big though. I wouldn't have used a five iron on one that size. You'd need a wood."
