Fleas on mice and rats

blueselaphe Nov 26, 2007 06:41 PM

I have a major out break of fleas on my mice and rats. It is starting to make the mice suffer, I think the rats are taking it a bit better. What is an effective treatment to correct this and prevent it in the future. The bad side, my mice and rats are in the garage with my roaches....
Thanks for your help,
Blue

I use Sevin dust. You can get it in the pest control section at Home Depot. Sprinkle a little on the rodents and some in the bedding. If you live in a humid area sprinkle some in the bedding every time you clean the cages. The bugs come in the bedding.

I thought I would add that even if it seems obvious. Pesticides will kill your reptiles. Get the bugs under control then change out everything and start raising feeders again.

Thanks guys. I used Sevin on my snakes a few years back but switched to a permithian based spray.
Sonya, I gas and freeze my mice and rats, would washing them off be ok? Sevin dissolves rapidly and people use it on their 'maters and what not.. Just wondering.. I lost all but two of my mice anyway... The last dead one I found yeasterday had all the fleas/mite on her back - hundereds of them.
Also, I used a "natural" flea and tick killer from wally world and go figure - it didn't work.
