Questions on IMG Ball Pythons

SPJ01 Nov 26, 2007 08:45 PM

I have a couple of questions regarding IMG balls and I was hoping someone could help me out with them.
I have an imported BP that when he arrived was black and white. After each shed, he has started to change from the white to a highlighter yellow color. He is also starting to get speckling on the sides.
1. Is anyone working with IMG ball pythons?
2. Is this recessive, dominant, or unknown at this time?
And lastly, if you have any pictures of your IMG BP's, please post them.
Thanks.

As far as i know its unproven ... i was hoping my girl would go this year but shes only 1200-1300 grams. I bought her as an captive hatched "hand pick" because she had a nice pattern and she started lightening up.... needless to say a very unique snake. Shes the yellowish one ... older pic but it gives an idea

Wouldn't that be DMG? Decreased melanin? Melanin is pigment (usually dark), so wouldn't increased melanin mean the animal is getting darker?

It's getting darker where the speckling is coming in but at the same time turning from white to yellow. I think the increase not only causes the speckling to come in but also alters the base color somehow. It's really interesting to watch the change after each shed.

I don't mean your snake in particular, I mean the term itself and what animals it usually refers to. Your snake is a really neat one, but it seems like everyone calls those IMG's when I would think they would be DMG's...just my thoughts...

its odd the melanin increases and decreases .... its changes remind me of a pied where one blotch does its own thing... thats what ive noticed. Some areas are yellowing/whitening and others are going deep black....

There are two types of snakes that are called IMGs - those that start out dirty looking and get dirtier to the point where you have a very dark almost black looking snake (depending on the degree of increase). And then there are the ones that loose a their color and gain the extra black speckling - like the ones in this thread - these IMO aren't IMGs - they should have their own name - but that is just my opinion and probably means nothing to anyone.

To this point IMGs of both sorts seem to be a fluke - not genetic - we do know that certain deficiencies can cause the color fading ones - as far as I know we haven't learned any possible causes for the melanin increasing ones.
