Pink-Eyed Leucies

GRich Nov 26, 2007 10:18 PM

What would you get if you crossed a leucistic Texas rat snake with a leucistic black rat snake? Well I didn't know, but I suspected that the gene in both were the same and that I would get leucistic rat snakes. True, I did. What I didn't expect was that I would get pink eyed leucistics. I knew they existed--I've seen them here and in the 'For Sale' section--but I didn't expect to get them in my clutch. Stupid me.

Anyway, I got two out of eight neonates with pink pupils. The irises are solid white, just the pupils are pink. And that's not all. The tongues on these babies are solid white as well, not just the tips, but the whole tongue and inside the mouth. I'm sure they're nothing to write home about, y'all have seen them before, but they are unique to me.

Both I and my camera suck when it comes to taking a picture, so please forgive me for the crappy photos.

Hmmm!....now THAT is very weird!! Both your leucy parents must BOTH be het for albino(amel) as well as both being leucistic!

Pink-eyed leucistics are really just animals that have had the albino trait introduced into them. Maybe both your animals were crosses of sorts, and you weren't aware of it. Unless you are absolutely positive of the parent stock from the guys that you got yours from, that's a very strong possibility.

That really shouldn't have happened unless that is the case.

Very strange indeed!

My female leucistic Texas came from a pet shop in Vallejo, CA. It was brought in by some guy who traded it for something else. I came in days later with a load of wholesale corn snakes for the store and picked her up as part of the payment.

The male leucistic black rat came from Don Soderburg. The odds that the leucistic Texas also coming from him is NOT all that astronomical, I suppose.

Or, it is possible one will most likely encounter more leucistics that are heterozygous for amelanism than not. But, I think all my albino black rats have white-tipped tongues. These have ALL white tongues. Unusual, or as common as corn flakes, it blows me out of the water. So cool.
