Where'd all the Black Rat morps go!?

byron.d Nov 26, 2007 11:26 PM

A few years ago I would see lavenders, rustys, and brindles. Not with any real regularity, but at least occasionally...

The past two years I havent seen much of anything in the way of Black Rat morphs.

Where'd they go!!!???

I need to upgrade my photos, since most of my babies are all grown up now, but here are some. I also have more morps (I mean Morphs), but no photos yet.

Mochi, my white-albino (non-leucistic)

Golum, unknown type of albino

Cu Teine, my lavender-albino

Grits, my leucistic black rat

Precious, my orange-albino

Naruto, My albino whitesided

I love those black rats. I have been hesitant to try and keep them here in OH with the native species laws. I have gotten mixed answers from "it only counts against wild type" to "all black rat morphs fall underr the law". If I knew for sure, I would definitely keep some. I especially like the jet blacks, the brindles, the leucys and the calicos.

Google your State's Laws. There's usually a legal way around the general rule. Here's a couple of photos of some of my solid blacks.

I was lucky to find a trio of brindles that are really exceptional looking, but other than that, I haven’t seen much of anything.... I'd love to find some nice looking rustys...

Not really, I'm not breeding many snakes these days. I do have a few special projects (to me anyway) that I hope to share in the coming years. One such project is from a long term albino outcross breeding I started in the late 90s. I bred a really high red albino male to a high red normal female from Missouri. Once the eggs hatched I ended up with 3.1 offspring, keeping one female to breed back to the sire. That was never realized, but I did breed her to another average looking albino male around 2004 or so. When those eggs hatched, I was very surprised to see four distinct color phases in the clutch. I had expected only normals and albinos, or perhaps even all normals if the albino gene was not compatible. Needless to say, I held back several of those animals and MAY breed a few of them next season. I'll at least breed a male albino back to the dam if all goes well.... we shall see.

Happy holidays all,
dg
