1st year breeder question

norse79 Nov 27, 2007 12:21 AM

Background info... I've been involved with breeding ball pythons for a few years, but this is my first year that I'm trying to breed MY OWN SNAKES.

Question... how common is it to never actually see the your males lock up, but come spring you have eggs? I check my rack twice a day and have only observed one lock up between one pairing and I have 3 males and 6 females breeding this year. I keep telling myself that it is still early in the season, but I see other people posting that they observe lock ups daily.

Thank you in advance!

You'll probably observe locks if you check twice a day. My pairs seem to stay locked up for around 12-24 hours at a time. It really is early in the season, though. Last year I didn't notice breeding activity til January.

Just keep checking, you're bound to catch them. I think the average time for a lockup is 9 hours, and they'll go longer or more than once if allowed.

It's still fairly early in the season for a lot of folks, and in some cases snakes will still be locking up come next April or May!

This is the hardest part...just waiting!

This is my first year breeding Balls also. I started to put the male albino in the het female cage, last month. Saw many lock ups. Now these past 2 weeks no lockups. I have been spraying the cage also daily and maybe I am missing the lockup. I will continue to pair them up until at least Feb and see what happens.
