breeding, stupid questions here lol

babystolemydingo Nov 27, 2007 03:22 AM

should i remove the hides b4 i put my male in? the hides are a tupperware type hide, with a hole in the lid. im just wondering will she come out to breed? Will he go in the hide with her?

how long on average until i see some kind of interest? my pastel male is 830 grams and my female is 1650 grams. does it matter if they are both super shy?

what do you all do when your snake goes into shed? separate until they have shed right?

this is my first attempt to breed so please dont laugh if you think these are stupid questions lol

I usually take the hides out. It's easier to keep an eye on them and it keeps the snakes from pushing the hide up against the top of the rack making it hard to pull out the tub. Several of mine don't even have hides since they don't use them in the rack. As for pairing them, I'd just leave them together for a few days or so...if you're not seeing locks yet it might just be early in the season. Last season none of my pairs started breeding until January.

Hope this helps,
Shelly

The male will go in the hides with the female, if he can fit, and a lot of times even if he can't. If the hides are big enough for both, and it's not going to cause you any major problems, leaving them in isn't a big deal.

If they're ready to breed, they'll get after it. Like the previous reply mentioned - leave em together for a few days, or until you see copulation. If there's no interest the first time, just try again in a week.

I let mine have their "space" when they were shedding, but there's different schools of thought on that. Some people swear by putting them together when they're in shed, some don't... if your snakes don't copulate, try putting them together even if they are in shed. Never hurts to try!

Good luck!

also, folks underestimate the power of misting. a little shower during the day gets some of the more less inclined to lock up later that night.
