How much light is needed?

eppon Aug 24, 2003 05:12 PM

Before I buy the bulb(s), I wanted an idea of what I may need. I have a 48x16x16 glass tank and was planning to use a ZooMed PowerSun for heat/UV. Will the 160 watt version be enough to reach 105 surface temp on the basking side and still be able to have 80ish on the cool side? How far away from the bulb should the basking site be?

Thanks in advance!

I've used both size bulbs on my glass tanks, all my tanks are 20 inches high though. If you plan to keep the basking spot low to the ground go with the 160 if you plan to raise it up you can get away with the 100. Either way with either bulb ajustments are going to have to be made to get the desired temps. In winter time with the 100 I did add an extra 100 watt incandescent bulb for added heat. Gees, I left ya right where you started sorry, lol.

I have a 100W and it's about 18 inches from the basking spot. The enclosure reaches 105 degrees. This in a 15 gallon rubbermaid bin. I'd go for the 160.

just a thought... if you are using a UV light make sure it is not higher than the recomended distance for the UV to be "effective". for flourecent lights it's usually 12 inches, for the others it is probably 18" although some manufacturers claim more.
