why don't you just feed the crickets out of a jar in the cage?

are you talking about adults or juvies?

juvies... i didn't want to feed out of a jar, because i don't want it to get lazy and inactive. Do cresteds do that, because i had a cham and if you do that they get lazy tongue. Just thought maybe cresteds would become lazy also. thnx.

I wouldn't feed from a jar either, no psychological value in it.

This probably doesn't much apply to you, but we live in a high mold area so we actually use paper toweling for our substrate. We get the cloth like ones, line the bottom and crumple a few around the floor under her vines and leaves. They hold humidity just as well as anything else and no worries about feeding or digestion. Our little girl even tore off some of the loose stuff to make her own nest when she was laying infertiles.

To be honest, I like paper towels so much now I think even when we move we'll probably stick to them. Just make sure you have some crumpled up loose ones on the bottom so they have places to bury and rearrange to suit them. Sure makes cleaning a bit easier.

that sounds like a really good idea. I think ill probably use that, unless someone knows of a more natural substrate that is available that i could use for a juvenile where i won't have to worry about impaction. thank you for that idea.

I use coconut fiber, it maximizes humidity.

As far as impaction, coco fiber IS considered an impaction hazard. I have never had a problem with impaction on any crested gecko including a juvenile. As long as you keep it thoroughly moist, it packs down pretty well.

Because it is widely regarded as a hazard, I can't exactly reccomend it, but I've been raising cresteds on it for about four years.

You can also use cage carpenting and a large water bowl, but you might as well use paper towels because of the hassle of cleaning the cage carpet.
