Cham and frog?!?!

herpforfun Nov 27, 2007 10:33 PM

hey i have a question.. im getting a new veiled cham... and i plan on getting a pretty good sized cage
and my tropical septups are usually realy nice and i was wondering .. has anyone tried anything along with a cham ... like a small tree frog in the inclosure ? i figured maybe if the tank was large enough perhaps that way the two arent right near each other the WHOLE time..
i realize theyre this way in the WILD btu didnt know how it would fly seeing as how both are captive bred...
any ideas guys ??

I'm no expert on Chameleons, but they won't even tolerate each other in the same enclosure. I doubt they would tolerate a frog, at least not for any length of time. They are very high strung. I don't think it worth stressing the Cham out. JMHO.

Don't even think about it. I have tree frogs (redeyes and green trees) and chameleons, the frogs have toxins on their skin to protect them, it burns when you hold them in your hand. A chameleon may try and eat the frog if he sees movement and shoot his tongue, this can't be real healthy for the chameleon or the frog,

Most chamelons should be in a screened cage anyway, except the very small species, and tree frogs usually need glass tanks for the humidity they need. (Differnt needs for each animal.)

Frogs also carry different kinds of parasites/ bacteria's .... so many reasons to just NOT do it...

And I also agree with Quig, chameelons get very stressed with other creatures in their space, or environment, your not even suppose to let them see other animals in the room (CAN FREAK THEM OUT)
Just get a small tank and set the frogs up with other frogs they will all be much happier and healthier.

Hope we have managed to talk ya out of your thought Take care. Let us know what ya get.

Don't chance it. They will compete for feeders, introduce an unknown mess of bacteria and possibly parasites, be active at different times when the other is trying to sleep, need different humidity and temp cycles, all sorts of problems as others mentioned. Whether they are cb or not makes no difference. CB animals can be just as infected as wc. The only kind of mixing I would even consider would be two species that occurred in the same wild habitat that feed on completely different things and could not eat each other.

There is always the possibility of the chameleon eating the frog which could be a pricey meal depending on what type of frog it is. Toxicity is a possible issue but not as likely as most people would think unless you were considering wild-caught dart frogs which would not be appropriate for a veiled chameleon cage anyway (which would be the case with a lot of frogs even most hylid-type frogs). That said I keep Panther chameleons and Grandis day geckoes in my large outdoor enclosures and have done so for many years without any problems although I am sure that some of the babies that hatch in the enclosures do get eaten by both the Panthers and the adult grandis as grandis day geckoes will canabilize their offspring given the opportunity. I also have populations of greenhouse frogs (Elutherodactylus planirostris) that have colonized my enclosures as well and I have never noticed any problems with this species either. This species of frog is a terrestrial species however. I should also point out that my enclosures are 4x4x8ft. and very well planted. Probably more well planted than most people's idea of well planted. My enclosures are bigger than what most people normally house chameleons in as well so it is possible to house the two together but under most circumstances it is probably not practical.

it would probably not be in the best interest for the frog or the chameleon to be housed with eachother. but it would probably not be in the best interest for the individuals to be kept at all if you havent kept either type of animal before. but thats besides the point...i have kept an adult male veiled chamelon with an adult whites treefrog for about a year. they were perfectly fine and do not cross paths at all. two completely opposing time schedules...BUT the only concern with housing a reptile w/ an ampibian is that the frog will always eliminate in the water bowl. some people chose not to provide water bowls for chams,so that could potentially eliminate the problem. as long as the chameleon cant eat the frog and the frog cant eat the chameleon they should be fine. most chameleons are a whole lot more compatible w/ other species than there own. ive also kept an adult male 16in ambanja blue panther w/ a pair of 10 in female standings in a 30gal high and they were all very happy until i separated them.
