Temperature Requirement Calculation

mistaman Nov 28, 2007 05:19 AM

Hi everyone,

I am due to move my Burm to a new larger viv over the Christmas break but need to know that I am providing the correct temperature requirements. Does anybody know of a calculation that will tell me the required watts of heat (eg lights and heatmats etc) to maintain a certain temperature for an enclosure? I think there must be something that takes into account ambient temperature, enclosure size and enclosure material and tell me how many watts of heat I will require?

Hoping somebody can help!!

Thanks,

Andy

Nah, there are way too many variables for any type of accurate calculation. That's one reason why thermostats, rheostats, dimmer switches, are highly recommended.

Your best bet would be to give us your cage size & type, a photo could be helpful, too, and tell us what you want to use for heat. Someone with experience in using that type of heat source should be able to give you a good idea of what you'll need.

It's also highly recommended to run a new setup for about a week to adjust the temperature & humidity settings before ever placing a reptile in it.

For burmese pythons I feel that above-ground heat is much better than belly heat. I think you should consider using either CHEs (ceramic heat elements) or RHPs (radiant heat panels).

Have a good one!
