Well, I can't tell you how to adjust it, as mine came with a dimmer, but get a thermometer!!! A good one, with a sensor you can place right on the substrate on both the cool end and warm end. Never guess about your temperatures (this should go for all reptiles). You can get them really cheap, I got mine for about $10 at a Wal-Mart, it's digital and has two sensors, as well as reading the humidity.
If you have a lamp also, try just turning the heat pad off and seeing what the temps are with just the heat lamp. Usually you only need one or the other. Use a thermometer, the human hand isn't good at measuring temp by 'feel'.

Definitely go out and get a thermometer so you can be positively sure what your temps are. It is possible that it could be over a 100 degrees. The Zoo Med 10 - 20 UTH can get vary hot depending on what is in the tank above it. Also you either need to invest in a thermostat which I think goes for around 60 bucks or do like I did and get a Zoo Med Rheostat. They cost about 20 dollars. If you cannot find either of those try Home Depot or Lowes and get a plug in sliding light dimmer.
