irian jaya carpet python questions.....

LoKii Nov 28, 2007 12:01 PM

I have an oppertunity to pick a up a irian jaya carpet python hatchling. I was wondering if you all could give me some info on this snake? They guy I am getting it from was going to let it go So I said I would take it. I don't know why he was going to let it go or do I care, cause someone like this does not need to have animals. Anyways I was wondering if you all could tell me the basic care req., how big it will get, temperaments and so on. If you can please post pics of your irian jaya carpet pythons. Thanks for any help!

Anthony Caponetto has a great care sheet on carpet pythons, which applies to the Irian Jayas:

Carpet Python Care

Here are a couple pics of my pair:

Mine are '06s.

I've actually never seen an adult IJ- only babies, but from what I've heard, they're probably not quite as fat as the balls, and are normally longer.

How long are they? So would you say their girth is more compariable to a bull snake? I am just trying to guess how thick it will be. Also what do they eat as adults? lrg rats or rabbits etc

I think they usually top out at around 4-5', but can get up to 6-7', but I think that's the exception.

Again, I've never seen an adult IJ, but I'd guess they'd probably be the same girth as a large gopher or other medium sized colubrid.

My male is eating rat pups now, and the female wont go near them, so feeding her retired breeder mice.

I think as adults, if you got 'em on rats, they'd probably eat medium rats, no problem...

They are great snakes. I have an 04 and she is about 5-5.5' long right now. They do not get near as big around as balls. She is on small adult rats. Here are fairly recent pics of her in a new 55 gallon tank.
