The “Peanut Butter” mutation is simple recessive similar to the other mutations (axanthic, hypo, lav, etc…) not a combination of various mutations. It may be the only TRUE hypomelanistic mutation in Florida Kingsnakes. The reason I say this is because this mutation reduces dark pigment (unlike the common hypo) which results the in a lavender/brown coloration as well as ruby red pupils similar to that of the Lavender mutation but darker in comparison

The only difference shown in the PB mutation is that it is allelic with the Tneg Amelanistic so when these traits are bred they produce a 3rd mutation “Jellies”

Other than that the PB mutation functions like all the other…

"PB" on the left ... "Hypo" on the right

Hope that helped…

If it is a simple recessive what’s up with the visual hets? I’ve never heard of that in any other colubrids

As of now... a lot isn't Proven as far as the PB mutation goes...

I mentioned (a while ago) that a normal female I have may be a "Visual het" but I did not mean it in the sense of Co-dom traits...

It is just my speculation that she maybe a carrier of the trait because she looks almost like the real thing... she is from PB genetics but not a visual mutation so this is the reason for my poor choice of phrasing. This is based on a loan snake and is hardly enough to make an accurate assessment. so my apologies for my wording in a previous post.

What we know for sure:

PB is recessive

PB is Allelic with T-

Most of the 100% het "Peanut butter" I've seen as hatchlings have a nice brown coloration. The Brown phenotype may just be the "Peanut butter" Phenotype??? My female started out Black (like a normal Floridana)... then she was a Chocolate brown (looked like a PB), Now she's a Greenish-brown (still looks like a PB... but isn't)

A Brown Phenotype... who knows... if the trait can be isolated and refined we may have "Chocolate Brooksi" on our hands in years to come !

Just think Sulphur, White Phase, Flame, Chocolate, Yellow, Green, Mahogany... there is Lots of things to do with Floridana!
