breeding BRB advice

garm Nov 29, 2007 07:30 AM

hallo

Working with GTPs most time, this winter I wanted to breed my pair of BRB for the first time. Sizes and age should be fine.
I seperated them 8 weeks ago and reduced the photoperiod from 12 to 8 hours a day. Daytime temps dropped to approx. 78F and nighttime temps were set in the higher 60s. Besides that I increased humidity.
Now nightime temps are still set in the higher 60s and daytime temps are in the high 80s (at the warm side of the cage). The pair is in the same cage now and until now nothing special happend.
I didn´t find so many breeding instructions in the web nor in literature.
So. was my plan right? if so, when can I expect mating behaviour?
Thanks for any advice and hallo from Germany.
Chris

What you're doing so far sounds reasonable. Yu may want to lower your Daytime temps to the mid-80's. But if the snakes can get off the heat, it shouldn't be a problem.

There are a couple of differences i've noticed between breeding chondros and breeding BRBs.

First, BRBs tend to breed a little later in the season than chondros. Second, female BRBs tend to go off feed even before they're bred. I often use this as one of the signs they're ready. Here's my basic timeline for breedign season:

Early November: Begin dropping nightime low temp (leave Daytime high at 86°F). By Late November, I'm down to 68° at night.

All this time, I'm watching for signs that the animals are redy to be intrtoduced: Females/males off feed, males shedding sperm plugs, females/males spending time in cool ends of cages. When I observe these signs, I make the introductions. I usually put the male in the female's cage but I doubt it matters.

Early February: Return NTL back to normal. In many cases, the animals will continue to spend time off the heat. Mating usually takes place February through April.

Watch for swelling in the female. They go through an ovulation just like chondros do but it's not as easy to witness.

Good luck with the BRBs! I'm trying my hand at chondros for the first time (well, the second time, but I got nothing last year) this year. Wish me a little luck. I've found chondros to be much trickier than Brazilians.

As soon as your born you start dying
So you might as well have a good time

ALRIGHT!

Scanning the scene
in the city tonight
We're looking for you
to start up a fight
There's an evil feeling
in our brains
But it's nothing new
you know it drives us insane

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy

There is no escape
and that's for sure
This is the end we won't take any more
Say goodbye
to the world you live in
You've always been taking
but now you're giving

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy

Our brains are on fire
With the feeling to kill
And it won't go away
Until our dreams are fulfilled
There is only one thing
On our minds
Don’t try running away
`cause you’re the one we will find

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
