KY Press: Officials Shut Down Game At Ky. State Fair

WAVE3 (Louisville, Kentucky) 21 August 03 Officials Shut Down Game At Ky. State Fair
Louisville: A game at the Kentucky State Fair has been closed down after authorities discovered it was breaking the law.
The game's owners were giving away iguanas and gold fish as prizes, something a Jefferson County ordinance says they can't do.
Louisville Metro Animal Control received a complaint about the game and went out Wednesday to shut it down. The game can re-open if they stop giving away the animals.
Dreama Western, the game's co-owner, seemed to feel like she was being targeted unfairly. "If you go to other fairs, you see goldfish games and rabbit games and places where they give away live animals, and I just think you should expect that when you bring a fair into your community."
But Animal Control officials disagree. They say it's dangerous for the animals and the people who win them.
Before the game was closed, 25 to 30 people had won an iguana.

What I find frightening is the attitude of the carnival which is now headed for several locations in TN.

I was at the state fair and saw that a game advertised giving away iguana and goldfish but it was already cloesed down. I think it is disgusting. Working in a pet store and now running my own reptile busniess, I always get call from people who win these animals and have no idea what to do with them. Besides it is cruel for the iguanas to sit out in th ehot sun in tiny containers only to be taken home and most likely killed. I refuse to sell baby iguanas. I will accepty donations from time to time and find proper homes for them. But there is no need to sell iguanas.

Next year I am trying to share a booth with poossibly the herptological society. I would like to sell reptiles but educate as well.

The winning amphibian tank this year at the fair was a 300 gallon alligator, red ear slider, african cichlid, and platy tank done by a crappy local pet store.
