Fully developed dead hatchlings ?

balls4all Nov 30, 2007 01:15 AM

I have had multiple clutches with at least one egg that fully developed in the egg that never piped and died in the egg. Was just wondering how many others have had this happen? Im guessing they have difficulty and drown in the egg ? This last clutch one piped with a 1/2 slit but never made it out of the egg. These were fully developed babies with sack fully absorbed. Thanks Bryan

I had this happen with my first clutch years ago...Since then I have slit every egg and never lost another one...

Well I think I will start to slit at day 60 for a few clutches to see if this helps. I just had a clutch of five I slit on day 63 and lost one. the one I lost piped on his own on day 60 but died in the egg ? Also I lost a full clutch this season all died in the egg and were deformed? thanks for your input !!!!!!!!!

In all my years, I have only had one fully developed hatchling that could not get out of the egg. I manually opened the egg to find that this animal would have never been able to pip on its own - severe deformities. It was "put" down shortly after birth as it would not have lived anyway.

I follow the Barker's practice of slitting all eggs on day 56, if they haven't slit already on their own.

Thanks for your reply!
I will be slitting part of my clutches this coming season '
I had some issues with the fan and suspect this to be part of the problem.

How many days until they try to pip. What temperature are the EGGS, not the incubator. If your temps are low and incubation time is too long you will have problems.

One egg tried to pip at day 60 , I have my probe in the egg container not in the soil but in the air within an inch of an egg. I have a secondary thermometer with min and max memory that indicates temps to be between 87.6 - 89.5 Thanks

My clutch last year had that happen with one of the babies. Two hatched, did great, the last one was fully developed but didn't appear to have fully absorbed the egg sack by the time it died.

Slitting the eggs might be the solution. You'll have to let us know!

I like to slit the eggs as I am impatient, but IMO if a baby is too weak to slit its own egg, more than likely it will not survive outside of the egg.

As someone else mentioned...were your temps stable through out the incubation period?

Im going to slit this season with half my clutches to see if this helps. I should have some cool morphs this season and really would like to get a handle on why ! Thanks Bryan

I had one a few years ago that would not come out of its egg. It was going to be a twin or something. Had a hard yolk next to it. I cut the egg open and out popped a healthy baby with a second undeveloped yolk in the egg.

Good think I helped it out. It would have stayed in there for sure

I can tell that baby is deformed, just by the Photo... That is why it didn't hatch out. Maybe the temps got to high or to low.. I would say to high.

Good eye! this is an egg that was from a clutch of 6 that all died and were deformed. I had a problem with the fan while this clutch was incubated and suspect that was the cause of the deformaties.
