Sick Veiled, HELP!!!

jrbl Aug 24, 2003 07:06 PM

I just got a Veiled Chameleon yesterday. He has a problem with his eye. It looks kinda smushed and it is kinda squinty. He doesnt seem to be able to see out of it. THe guy I got it from said his chameleons get this eye thing sometimes, and he got this stuff to put in their eyes, its call Oxy tetrecicline(SP?) He said he outs it in their eyes and they get better. Can I get this stuff anywhere or just from a vet. Is their any other treatment options? Please help, jrbl

first off, the breeder shouldn't have sold you a sick cham, that's just wrong. second, take your cham to the vet asap. when they are young, they are very likely to die from illness quickly. without the use of one of it's eyes, it is less likely to hunt. or to be able to catch anything. see a vet asap.

it is likely one of two things. dehydration, but if that was the case it would probably not be seeing out of either eye. and the second thing that is common for chameleons is upper respiratory disease caused by getting a cold from either not having enough ventilation or being too cold without a high enough temp. basking spot. if it is URI then raise the temperature in the cage and be sure to keep it in a screen cage, not an aquarium. i had a 2 mo. old die because i kept it in an aquarium and it developed URI. another way to see if it has URI is to see if it is open mouth breathing of if you can hear a crackling noise coming from the mouth/throat.

Thanks for the help. I was going to bring him to the vet anyways, but you saying I should take him asap ave me the extra push I needed to get there. I got him checked out and got some medicine. The vet said it was possibly climitia(SP?) or some other type of infection. I got an oral antibiotic as well as a topical one. After only to treatments with the topical antibiotic, his eye opened and he looked around with it. I am very glad he doesnt have a respritory disorder. He seems to be on his way to recovery, so I couldnt be happier. Thank you for your help, jrbl
