Spilotes p. mexicanus?

Crotalus427 Nov 30, 2007 12:11 PM

I’ve seen more spilotes post here than in the ratsnake forum. So I thought this would be a better place for this question. Anyone know who works with Spilotes p. mexicanus? Or any CB Spilotes? Any info will help.

-Thanks

Mexicanus are rarely seen, don't know why. IMHO they are amongst the prettiest ssp. of Spilotes. I'm currently working towards F3 babies. They're finally large enough to breed and I also have an imported pair that could go this year as well. I just introduced the imported female to the male though he's in his hide and doesn't even know she's there. Its a good idea to keep pairs together year 'round or even trios so they can acclimate to each other as well as be comfortable in their surroundings. Heavy misting after a cool and dry brumation is a great trigger.

Billy what local are you breeding? Is it all the SA spilotes that you have or do you have any CA animals?

Mexicanus ranges into Central America but the nicest ones come from northern Mexico. Here is a female from the Brownsville Zoo. Tom Davis is suposed to have some but I have never seen his adults, I did buy a youngster a while back from him but had little orange. The snake pictured is in my opinion the nicest one I have ever seen, ever!

I concur, that is a beauty! The locales of imported founding stock is anyone's guess. The shipping point could be many hundreds of miles from where the animals were collected. I'd venture a guess that even in a given locale there is probably huge variations among individual animals.

We bought a townhome on an island in the Carib. thats off the coast of Panama (Bastimientos). I had an 8' at least blast across the path in front of me that was entirely black - granted it was moving like a Coachwhip but I chased it into the scrub and saw it when it paused, no yellow anywhere!

We'll be going back to close on it when its completed and you KNOW me and the GPS will be cruising. Its the only development allowed on the island as the rest is either Nat'l Park or set aside for the native indians. There's a huge freshwater lake in the middle so I'll be doing some Peacock Bass fishing as well!

Check out Red Frog Beach on the web, thats the name of the place (they have a solid red Poison Dart Frog on the island.

I hate you Billy!
Anyway nice Spilotes again.
Let me know when you have babies, I'de love to pick up a nice fully banded male while I love all the spilotes I want to strive for a really nice 50/50 banded coloration. Solid yellow wouldn't be bad either.

While I'm at it here's one of her temp cages I'm working on

The cage is out of a dishwasher, I've wanted to make one for S&G for a while

Hi Nate!
Did this baby came from Michelle?

tokaysrnice Dec 01, 2007 10:07 AM

sure 'nough.
She was the pic of the litter for 07.
I wish she would show some of her defensive behavior but all I ever get is a head but every once in a blue moon.
