Malfunctioning frog tank heater casues fire in city apartment
From Patriot-News Staff Reports, 11/30/07 12:36 PM EST
A malfunctioning frog tank heater caused a fire this morning that resulted in an estimated $35,000 in damage to a unit at Washington Square Apartments at Second and Washington streets in Harrisburg.
Fire Chief Donald Konkle said fire fighters responded to a single alarm just after 5 a.m. and had the fire under control in about 30 minutes. Fire units were cleared from the scene just after 9 a.m.
“The fire was caused by a frog tank heater in a fourth floor bedroom,” Konkle said. “We were able to contain the fire to that room. This was a two-story apartment that started on the third floor, and the frog tank was in a fourth floor rear bedroom.
“All of the damage was confined to that one apartment,” he said. “The only person displace was the occupant of that apartment. There were four people there at the time of the fire but our understanding is that three of them were visitors.”
There was extensive fire damage to the room and heat damage to the hallway and other areas of the fourth floor and minor water damage on the third floor, Konkle said.
There were no injuries for firefighters or residents, Konkle said.
