Do king snakes bite?

KrazyKritters1 Dec 01, 2007 07:01 AM

I hate when you hear people say they do not bite. Personally when I talk about or sell a snake I tell people not to expect anything out of there snakes they don't expect out of themselves. Just because a snake bites you does not mean it is a bad snake. I never guarantee that anything don't bite, if it has a mouth it can bite.

I see this at lot in ads, at petshops and in other things. Exspecially when refering to king snakes. Dang if I had a penny for every time I've been bit by a king I'd owe a lot in taxes LOL. I have 2 floridana morphs that want to eat my hand. I know it is feeding response but those 2 rarely calm down after they have been handled for a while either. I don't mind the bite, I worry more about the snake and secondary infection if they lose teeth. No matter how carefl I am they can always find a way to get me.

OPPSS just venting after I say a ad on an indigo.

I need to get some cool pix of bites like you all have

My King bit me for the first time the other day, although I'd barely call it a bite. She was excited about feeding time and I was removing her water bowl (part of our routine) and she just was confused, a quick bite on my finger but she immediately realized I wasn't a mouse and let go. The speed of it, more than anything, was startling! I half knew it was coming and it still just happened so fast! It was kind of cool, now that I think about it.

Hah, I work at a reptile store and get people asking "Does it bite?" ALL THE TIME.

I always say "If it's got a mouth, it can bite." I then go on to explain that if you use a little common sense, and wash your hands before and after handling the snake...chances are, you're not going to get bitten by a calm snake that's accustomed to handling.

Someone once tried to tell me that rosy boas never, ever bite, sweetest things ever, etc, etc...so I let him take out an adult rosy that's been at the store forever. Why? Cause it is CRANKY.
He opened the lid, still going on about how rosies never bite, blah blah blah...and it struck out and nailed him on the finger!
His audience stopped paying attention to him after that. Hah!

If it has a mouth...it can bite!

Jenny,

The first and only time I have ever held a rosy, it was back in 1994 and I got tagged big time!!! LOL!!!

From what I know, they are calm pets, but man, that wasn't what I was expecting!

Take care!

The first Indigo I ever caught was on the northern side of Lake Okeechobee on railroad tracks bordering 2 orange groves. He was layed out lengthwise basking in the sun of a fairly cool morning. As I bent to gently lift the gorgeous animal, he went berserk at first touch and started to hiss loudly and bite savagely, at my shoe, my pants any object in his way. So much for even Indigos never biting, as all my reading suggested.

PS He did calm down within a minute or two and allowed himself to be handled, after the psycho display, never behaving that way again.

yep very common question when people ask about biting heck they even ask if my snakes are "poison". each time i open the cage or tubs/racks people ask does this one bite and does this one bite did they ever bit you? sigh i always answer to that they can bite and will do. when they ask about this snake ever bit me i said no not yet and can get ya. these question tend to boring me.
