rabbit pellet substrate?

maggie* Aug 24, 2003 07:57 PM

Hi All!
I just bought my first bearded dragon today. She's a 5 month old yellow phase and she is very very cute. I'm completely new to this and have been trying to do lots of research. The store suggested that I keep her on rabbit pellet substrate. I find it a little stinky. Just wondering if anyone else uses this or knows any pros/cons about using this as substrate. Also-- I just gave my crickets some grapes. Should I provide them with an additional 'water' source? What do you feel is the least hassle for feeding them. And (I know this sounds dumb) how do you physically get them out of their box without having them jump all over the place???
Thanks so much!!!
maggie.

I suggest you read some of the recent posts regarding sand woodchips newspaper... they all have good and bad points. my choice for a dragon that age - playsand.

we give our crix miner-all gut load once a week. we feed them scrap fruits and veggies from all the othe ranimals so they dont need additional water. we go through several thousand crix a day so we dump a thousand or so into a 20 gal rubbermaid tub then scoop them put with a plastic cup, dust and feed.

I use a tube that's open on one end. I leave it in with the crickets and when I need some, I just pick up the tube, and shake some into a bag and dust them. The tube I use was actually what the crickets were shipped in from www.wormman.com
