An Unexpected Gift from an Old Friend..

orchidspider Dec 01, 2007 08:36 PM

I called a buddy whose really into turtles up in Asheville Nc, to see if he had a spare male ball python (he told me to never buy them as he always has people giving them to him) and he happend to be comming down to Charlotte today. Well he also asked me if I wanted the female Graybanded he had, I said "I dont have $270 to give you". His reponse was that he needs space and he knows it would get a better home than it had with him -"all I do is feed it, you'd give it a better home" (though hes very good with his animals. Well he also brought me a 20 long to put it in, and a water dish and heating pad. I told him I didnt want to buy any more snakes and save money and if he had a cage etc, Id take it. Well I posted a pic of her- its not great but it gives you an idea. She will get treated like royalty, even though shes not a bullsnake- which are my favorites... I finally asked him if he wanted any money for it, and he said no but just that if he or his gf wanted any orchid growing advice or plant care stuff... I would owe him, well shucks thats an easy request!

She is my first Gray Band, and I think I'm going to enjoy the privelage of owning her.

He sure must be a good friend!! Not one of my frends has ever given me anything close to a gray band. Actually, now that i think about it I usually just get grief from my frinds!

She is a very nice looking animal, Good luck with her!!

This snake is following on the adaption of 3 ball pythons which I was given with a 30gal breeder tank for them- the week before, after my vet probed them and told me they were females, I called Charlie and hence not only a male ball, but this female Gray band to boot! Some times when you put your foot down on not buying any more snakes, you still get them anyway!

Very, very nice looking Gray and some pretty nice friends too. Think I can borrow your friends next time they have a Gray banded they want to give away?

I talked to him again today and he said she eats 3 mice per week just by leaving them in the cage. He got her as a smaller part of a larger purchase of herp tanks, equipment, along with a male gray band (which the person said was not doing well, and it later died for my friend ) along with a stuning pair of tropical black milksnakes (I think they were of central American origin)- these were totally black and shiny, each being 5'- the biggest milks I've ever seen and STRONG, just beautiful- those he sold. He had offeres for my snake, but they came often at the same time when he had promised it to another bidder, well that bidder fell through and he ended up sitting on the snake and only seeing it for a few mins each week when he fed and cared for it. Shame he thought with such a nice snake. So he wanted me to have it, since I also do programs wiht my animals, and would enjoy it. His gf/partner is also in nursing school here in Charlotte, and 2 hours away from my friend- and I am pretty into the resturant and cultural scene here in downtown Charlotte. I'm looking forward to getting her out around town to the symphony, shows and operas also- its amazing the deals you can get on $$$ tickets with a student ID- gotta love it, and Charlotte is culturally and physicaly growing in leaps and bounds. Glad you all liked the pic of her, I'll try and take some better ones- if.. she will ever just pose nicely for a pic!

"Pits are the best"... In what world is this true? Such a place does not exist!

Orchid - congrats on your first Alterna. It is uber nice blairs.

Now... drop the pits, and give in to the dark side!

Best Wishes,

Steven Owens

Not enough diversity and with the cost of alterna's being so high, I'd be broke before I knew it. For the cost of one adult alterna, I can get a stunning pair of northern bulls, like the male Newton County Indiana bull in the attached pic...thats just cause you egged me on with your "blasphemy" comment! . However, I aggree that as far as screeming color is concerned, alternas might, and I use that with caution... are more brightly colored than bulls- but I just like the whole package with bulls.

Brad Anderson Dec 02, 2007 03:42 PM

Short for pituophis. To each his own, but bull snakes over alternas? What are those guys smokin???? LOL BA

orchidspider Dec 02, 2007 04:04 PM

Ok, I could... could see your point when your discussing Blairs phases- but come on guys, how can a gray and black alterna be any more colorfull than my texas red bull (who is just getting opaque) in the pic below? or the Indiana bull I posted before... the black and gray alternas are nice but.... so are the black, white, rusty brown and yellow with orange in between the scales- BULLsnakes! LOL!!!!! However, A nice Blairs phase alterna can take on most bullsnakes any day-- cept of course for a deppii- then the Blair's have some down right serious compitition!!! (pardon my spelling, but this site needs a spell check program!)

AMEN! Mike. Great photo. How's your Black Gap/Hueco babies doing? BA

MikeRusso Dec 03, 2007 06:17 AM

Hi Brad.. Somehow i knew that we would be on the same page on this topic!!

My 2.1 Hueco/Gap hatchlings are all doing well.. It turned out that one of the females is 100% Hueco from a different mom that the H/G crosses, so now i am in need of a Hueco male.

I finally got this girl that caused all this good hearted posting to sit still for the camera. She is VERY tame and I was actually able to leave her in that position with ease. Thanks you all for your warm responses, and good intentioned thoughts. I look forward to reading more postings on here, now that I have my "membership" card!

That might be tempting, but Im happy with my Kansas Yellow girl that that same friend actually gave me 5 years agoe, and she produced some nice hatchlings this year when I bred her to my Texas Red this year. She is pictured below. But thanks for the compliment! (My friend gave her to me as a yearling and she was pretty drab looking when I got her- he later regretted parting with her!)
