Leopard / Sonoran Boas

patenaud Dec 02, 2007 11:19 AM

Hi.

I'm interested in eventually getting some leopard boas. I like the color but most importantly I like the smaller size. I've noticed that people are crossing them with Columbian BCI...

I'm assuming that this will increase the adult size of the leooards offered in the future and dilute what I find is their most attractive trait...small size.

How hard will it be in the future to know just how big the leopard that you buy is going to get?

Anyone planning on keeping the locality pure?

Thoughts?

Thank you
Denis

Hi,
I agree that crossing them into the colombians dilutes atractive there attractive traits, and not only the size. I have been breeding true local sonorans for around 6 years and have found my adults to max out at 5ft for females and 4ft for males. A friend crossed a sonoran male with a colombian female for many breedings, years ago, before realising they were different locals. The adults always grew to around 7ft.

I plan to cross the leopard trait into my true sonoran anerythristics and hypos.

Regards,
Warren

The leopard hets you see now are just the first wave of hets. Obviously there will be many people trying to keep the leopard 100% Sonoran. It's certainly cheaper to make hets with a Colombian, and most everyone has one. But, like you, I'd be much more interested in a 100% sonoran het. It's very important to say what it is you are selling, it's equally important to ask questions when buying. As long as people are honest, no one will have a problem. The problems come when people try to pass off a snake as something else than what it is. I can't wait to see the leopard ghosts of Dr. Booth either, because he has that awesome anery.

Pure......... Funny their Pure now. Hans himself says "he thinks due to their small size that they may be Sonorans" so I guess that makes them Pure huh?

well you see a lot of adds have been on the classifieds for het leopard crosses. Making the majority of hets availible not pure. Maybe people are being greedy by breeding a small male to a huge female for more babies.

Uhhhh OK???? so "pure" wasn't the right word. Lighten up.

I was just alluding to the fact that BCIs from that particular region have a smaller adult size that is attractive to some people. It may be important to disclose what the origin of the parents is so someone who wants a 5-6 footer doesn't end up with a 8-9 footer.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone. LOL

I've heard Leopards come from Sonora and I've herd they come from Costa Rica. I think there are and have been some Germans that were/are pretty well connected with Costa Rica.
I'm no expert of course, but I'd think along those lines for outbreeding to keep them small and to maintain the dark, if you want to maintain the dark.
