UVB??

Roger Van Couwen Dec 02, 2007 03:05 PM

My little Black-throat is not a cute little lizard anymore. He's a leviathan whom I have learned to behave toward well enough that he doesn't always have to give a nose-hiss anymore when I approach him. And I'm having great luck teaching him to not flip out at being picked up. I don't bother him much, except to pick him up three times per week. Mostly I visit him just to admire him and to talk softly to him.

Question: Does he need UVB?

I think everyone here will agree that you DON'T need UVB.

But your lizard does not. Of course, you must provide decent husbandry.

That your monitor is growing fine and has an attitude tells me your doing fine.

With that in mind, your monitor has grow well, so why would you ask such a question? Cheers

all. He/she seems to be healthy no matter how carefully I test his reflexes and look for mites with a magnifying glass. He's perpetually either exploring, resting alertly, or sleeping. Or eating. He does hate the magnifying glass LOL. But so far, no mites or bites. And he climbs all over his room. He hisses me a lot more when I'm in there while he's on the floor. That makes sense, and I expect him to eventually feel more at ease in that situation. I never touch him or approach him when I catch him on the floor. If he gets antsy and hisses horribly, I leave the room to let him finish his tour and get back up the ladder to his baby-blanket familiar elevated shelf where he feels safe. To me, he is now truly a giant. He amazes me.

Great answer, In most cases, our worry is irrational. If you set monitors up with choices, they tend to do really well. The problem is, us keepers lose control and feel helpless and start to worry.

How could this be, its so easy, All I have to do is maintain the cage and feed the monitor/s.

I think, thats how its suppose to be, let the monitor do what it does well. Cheers

Roger, no offense intended here, but, a simple forum search would have resulted in more pages with the correct answer than there are monitors in the world.

Like Frank said, there are some reptile keepers that need to use UVB and there are those that don't. It's true with more than just varanids, too.

Have a good one!
