Experiment with kitty litter box

Geckjo Dec 02, 2007 10:32 PM

I started putting a box of sand as a kitty litter box for my leopards to experiment if it'll work. Has any one tried? Since they poop in a similar spot, I thought it may be easy to scoop out the poop of sand from the box, while using paper towel substrate. My thought is that it would be an easy way to keep clean. 3 of my elder geckos use it, and my newest memeber, a 7 month year old boy (Hagan) uses it sometimes ( still poops on same side of cage - but not in the corner box).

I'd appreciate any feedback, Geckjo

I think cleaning up the sand they kick around would be more work to clean than the poop.

I just keep an extra layer of one paper towel on that corner of the enclosure. That way, I don't have to rip apart the whole terrarium, just a 1-paper towel area - so i have to pick up one hide, remove the paper towel, replace with a fresh paper towel, and replace the hide. Not terribly effort-intensive, but if you find your experiment makes it easier for you, there's probably no harm in it - much lower probability of impactions than a full cage of sand, anyway.

Hi olstyn.
I just switched from calci-sand to paper towels last month. Thanks for the advice. I think I'll try your way. Overlap with folding extra paper towel over at end of cage. My husband has suggested that same paper towel routine, and plus your input, now I'm gonna give it a try when I change substrates this week.

Thanks again. Geckjo

yesterday, Hagan, my youngest leopard, pooped in the litter box , walked around and pushed the sand and poop out of the box last night. He made another poop, in the litter box, too. This experiment seems to be showing that a litter box is not so useful and doen't really make a difference. Thanks for your input.Geckjo

just wondering... would they still use it if you put a paper towel on it?? If so It would be easier to clean.
