WhiskeyTango Dec 03, 2007 01:03 AM

I am planning on breeding mice for a baby red tegu this spring, I know 1 male per colony.I plan to keep them is a 10 gallon in my rabbit barn. How hot can they get before I will have problems? And how cold?I am in LA.

A feeding them..Can I feed them a horse all grain?It is mostly oats,corns and molasses.. 14%.

Any other advice is welcomed
thanks in advance!

That feed is too high in a sugar content for the mice. You could end up with some over weight diabetic mice. If you want an easy diet, get some HIGH quality senior dog food (no Ol' roy!). Mix whole oats, lentils, peas, few beans, pasta, and a few other whole grains and you will have an excellent mouse food. It will be more nutritional than most of that crap being sold nowadays.

As for the barn situation, if your keeping them outside during the summer, anything hotter than 80 will stress them out and they will either get sick or not breed. Mice and rats do well kept cool. If it gets hot, situate a fan to blow directly on them and help evaporate that hot muggy air. Make sure they have access to cool clean water constantly! Mice and rats wont eat if they dont have access to water.
Hope that helps!
