New Yellowbelly and Candling pics!

j3nnay Dec 03, 2007 11:40 AM

Cute little boy. My boyfriend named him Klagoth the Destroyer.

Thanks Dave! He's eating like a champ!

And my attempts at taking pictures of candling a couple of my eggs. In another couple weeks gonna try again, this time with a tripod set up!

Thanks for looking!

i candle just like everyone else. but does anyone wonder as i do, if this all of a sudden source of light (diffused as it may be) might scare the bejesus / life out of some not yet fully developed, as of yet completely sensory deprived, embryo. i know towards the end of the hatching period, it seems as if they sort of jump and twitch away from the light.

the obvious answer is use a low wattage candling beam but still...

The baby in the picture with less huge thick veins twitched when I first put the light on...and there's not that much baby in there to twitch!
I think a similar argument is made over ultrasound - we can't hear the sounds made, but the baby in the womb can, because it's passing through the fluid. That's why babies get so agitated during an ultrasound, especially the farther along they get.
Most people came out okay anyway. Since most of our snakes come out just fine anyway too...I doubt there's much of an effect on them.
At least, I sure hope so. That little maglight is the only candling device I have!

thanks jenny, thats interesting - i did not know that ultrasound stuff, but what you say makes sense. i just assume those little central nervous systems are pretty fragile and of the animals that dont hatch, we'll never know what happened 100% of the time. probably i am overthinking the amount of stress it creates.

Maybe try not candling a clutch and compare it to a clutch that has been candled, and see if there's any sort of noticeable difference?

I know my first clutch had one baby die in the egg...but I didn't candle that clutch.
This clutch I have one for sure dead egg, and one that will amaze the heck out of me if it makes it. I fully expect the other 6 to hatch.

If it's bad enough, I'm sure we'll find out!

If they hatch exactly when they're supposed to, they'll hatch December 31st.

Hehe. I "cycle" during the summer months, when the temperatures around here are 90 degrees inside...85 with the AC on! At night, it would only drop to maybe 70, usually about 75. Why bother heating when it's that hot in here?

So, when it gets cold out, I put my heat back on, and temps stay pretty constant, and I start putting the snakes together usually around August or September... My cycling goes kind of backwards!

Best of luck this season!
