Green urates and constipation

fatscales Dec 04, 2007 02:58 AM

Hello everyone, my sonoran gopher female has recently shed. She didnt poo after her last meal and her eyes blued up. She shed and dropped a load, the urates looked light green, is this just from holding her poop in longer than normal?

Also, my new albino sonoran male has not pooped since I brought him home, I fed him two large mice (last sunday) and a small rat (yesterday) so far and no poop. Ive had him on paper towels, but the store he was purchased from had him on aspen and was feeding him live (he eats f/t fine) could he be impacted? constipated from stress of re-homing?

Thanks, Shahe

the temp is high for her hot spot would be 87 degrees room temps are around 70-73. She eats fine and has never had green poop befor. The hot spot only takes up about a quarter of the tank.

Thanks, Shahe

Hello, the temps actually sound pretty good, Hmmmm!!!!! I have never seen this in snakes but have in lizards. My Solomon Islands Monkey tails feces and urates occassionally had a green tint or was dark green which was not the norm. They were vegetarians though and ate mostly greens.

A Vet told me that the discoloration was due to the skinks not properly digesting their food which had to due with the wrong temps. These temps were not promoting a quick metabolism. Sorry for long post, I was just thinking it could have been something as easy as temps.

Good Luck, hopefully someone else will chime in here!!!! Jason

....have seen this before in various lampropeltines(this includes pituophis genus)...pits seem to thrive at SLIGHTLY cooler temps in fact than others in this subfamily(e.g. kings, rats) but sounds like you have a good range of temps for thermoregulation-so i don't suspect temperature as the culptri.this time of year lots of houses desicate from winter's drier ambient air not to mention typical residential heating equipment(forced air, electric heat, convection heaters, etc.) and this no doubt plays a role.
if you use something like cypress mulch, try changing it out with a new fresh batch that's nice and moist.maybe a larger water bowl is a good idea this time of year.or an occasional misting;or a 15 minute soak in shallow lukewarm water.

I have a large water bowl at one end, while she was shedding I sprayed her twice a day for about 3-4 days, I didnt spray when she was blue.

On another note The adult male sonoran gopher pooped today and it looked good.

Green urates are usually a sign of liver problems. This is commonly seen in animals that are "power fed".
