When (and how) to give up?

star Dec 04, 2007 11:04 AM

It's been 2 and a half weeks since Squirt got sick with an upper respiratory infection. She had been on antibiotics (finishing on Sunday) and she was feeling better. She even ate a cricket on Saturday and Sunday. I have been giving her eyedrops, her eyes were still bad from the infection. All this is on Dr's orders.

Yesterday, she seemed to go backwards and didn't want a cricket at all. This morning I looked at her and her eye was completely crusted over. I'm not sure if her eye is saveable at this point. She didn't want a cricket. I gave her another dose of antibiotics, even though she was already done with the two week course. I soaked her and she drank more than i have ever seen her drink, and she soaked her eyes a bit. She still has some problems breathing, but not nearly what she was having. I plan to syrenge feed her tonight if she's not ready to hunt a cricket.

I know if she can't see to hunt, it would be cruel to try to force feed her the rest of her life. I would have the vet euthanize her. But what if she has sight in one eye? Could she hunt like that?

And am I just being cruel, keeping her alive? What have you done in a similar situation?

I appreciate all the advice. Thank you.

Just keep doing what your doing, do the best you can !

I have had some of the weakest survive, and some that I figured were stronger, die, so don't give up on her yet!

I hope things are going better.
I've never had a one-eyed lizard, but I did once have a snake who went halfblind from a cataract (the vet felt it was best to just leave it as long as the other eye was healthy.) I'd always assumed that if they lost an eye they'd automatically be more parnoid and whatnot, but she really didn't seem to care. Stayed very tame, never seemed surprised, hunted fine, still annoyed me by insisting on live food, so I assume a lizard could shrug it off just as well.
