Reply to DA-Spike - what kind of cham should i get?

micky-kennie Aug 24, 2003 09:51 PM

What about a Mellers chameleon? They cost about $100 for a hatchling ( adults are usualy wild caught and die quickly). They are more colorful than Jacksons and their size also makes them quite impressive animals. Of course they will require a huge cage or free roaming set up and will require a little extra care, but if you can provide these, I think that they would make an incredible addition for any chamelon keeper. I was thinking of getting one myself, but don't think I can provide enough space for a full grown adult. Thats just my thought, they may not be for you, but thought that it would at least be worth mentioning. Good luck!

i thought that only a few mellers had been successfully bred in captivity? if this is true them=n his chances of getting a cbb baby are pretty slim. also aren't they one of the more agressive or threatening chameleons? to me i think DA would do better with a vieled of panther. shoot if it's color he wants there is always the sunburst. just my .02.

ok, unless you are a pretty experienced keeper, don't attmept a mellers. they aren't known to live very long in captivity, no matter whether they are captive hatched, or wild caught. they are extremely sensitive to stress, and most die in 8 months to 2 years. if you know quite a bit on keeping a chameleon, and can handle all the needs of one, then you could, but something like a veiled or a panther is much easier to keep alive.
