What could be better than a scrimshaw of an Eastern Indigo on a Randall Knife? This Randall Knife belongs to a friend of mine in Lakeland Florida and the Indigo was done by a female scrimshander he knows. I have been thinking about having her scrim snakes on one or more of my Randall Knives.

I collect Randall Knives and Eastern Indigos are one of my favorite snakes. What could be better than a scrimshaw of an Eastern Indigo on a Randall Knife? This Randall Knife belongs to a friend of mine in Lakeland Florida and the Indigo was done by a female scrimshander he knows. I have been thinking about having her scrim snakes on a couple of my Randall Knives. I am thinking another Eastern Indigo and an Eastern Diamondback and a BRB.

...you should find out how much she wants per knife for the artwork and a sample knife price. I bet tons of people who frequent the reptile forums would be interested. I know I am.

On that note could you send me an email with details/way to get ahold of you. I don't have the free time or necesarily the free cash at the moment because I am in the last 2 weeks before graduation and will then have to spend a ton getting set up for working(transportation, wardrobe, etc..). However I shoulod have the time and the cash later this year so would be good to have a way to look you or her up for that purchase.

LOL well I will try and get a decent picture of him soon but right now he is hiding in moss and almost white blue. So in a few days when he sheds I will be able to get a good fresh shed pic of him assuming I have time with being in last two weeks of college.

BTW is there any detriment to handling once you start cooling them down? I sort of assume there isn't but I've never cooled BRB's before.

I can't imagine handling would be a bad thing and people clean cages and transfer them to temporary tubs so as long as you don't take him on a 5 hour road trip I think you'll be alright and best of luck with finals

I went to a gun auction last spring were they sold several Randall knives and I still have the list and final prices. Until then I had never heard of a Randall knife and now all I know is that they are not cheap. They sold 5 different model #14 for between $375 and $565. I didn't stay to see what they got for the 18" 70's model #1 or the special order 50's model #1 and a rare model Malasjsian Kris special order....WOW! that one sounds exspensive. Anyways, that is a beautiful knife! I LOVE the scrimshaw work! Maybe I could have this woman scrim my Swiss army knife.LOL. Seriously though, scrimshaw work like that can't be cheap. I'm guessing at least $300 ?

Jeff Clark Dec 08, 2007 09:18 PM

Dan,
..That $300 figure for a good scrim is about right. I know of one scrimshander who's work regularly adds over a grand to the value of a Randall Knife.

Jeff,

Very nice. I find that tattoo artists and schrimshanders almost never depict herps realistically or acurately. This one did a very good job.

You'll recall that I am a bladesmith and upon occasion have had my works adorned with schrimshaw. When my best friend got married I made them a matched set of knives. One had her cats depicted on both scales. His had a Grand Canyon Rattlesnaker on one side (which he did is doctoral research on) and a Willard's on the other. Both knives were schrimmed on Wooly Mammoth ivory. Unfortunately I don't have photos. Also made one for a grad student at Mississippi State who was studying Western Pigmy Rattlers.

It doesn't go on every knife and I haven't incorporated any in many years. But when it does work, it really pops. That indigo is superb.

Cheers,

Terry,
..Good to see you on the forum. I share your disappointment with the artistic ability of many scrimshanders and tat artists. There is a guy on the Boa forum who recently showed PICs of a really nice looking Surinam Redtail tattoo he was doing for a customer.

Wow, that's a beautiful work of art. I might have to think
about getting some scrimshaw done on a big shark tooth, that would
connect two of my favorite hobbies. Thanks for posting it!

Paleo-dentist to be more precise. Check out these fossil megalodon shark teeth, the two big ones are about 6" long. Considering that the biggest teeth in a modern Great White's mouth max out at 2", imagine how big these megalodon sharks were.

Awesome stuff, I remember seeing fossil teeth from megalodon's on some nature show before, probably one of the discovery ones on dinosaurs/predators of the past.
