Question about Fem Breeding Size??

latin1956 Dec 05, 2007 01:04 PM

I have seen alot about breeding a female when she reaches 1500G. But now I see people are breeding them at lower weights.

So my question to you all when do you breed the females.??

What is the weight of the Female??

I have read books on the subject but would like to hear from all the proven breeders out there.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Tom,

I would say that 1500 grams is a good size for a 2-3 year old female. That being said, some just never get that large. I have seen old females that are only around 1200g or less.

In my opinion, once a female is 3 years old she should be large enough and is definitely sexual mature. The larger the better!!

on BPs mention 1000 gms as a minimum female size for breeding. I myself like to see them over at least 1300 gms. That being said, a nice, "chunky" (not obese) 1200 gm female might be a better bet than a "skinny" 1500 gm animal!
