baby veiled dead

diablocds1 Aug 24, 2003 10:21 PM

Recently I bought a baby veiled about 4 months old. It didn't eat well, and I never saw it drink. I had a drip system for him, he was kept in a screen cage, and fed crickets. He started to keep his eyes shut most of the time, but they werent crusty or anything. I brought him to breeder and he said he may be dehydrated. so i put him in the shower a few times, but he still never drank, and he continued to get weak. then i came home today and he was on the bottom of the cage dead (although his body is still changing colors, is that weird?). I would like to know what had happened with him so i can make sure nothing happens to any others i may get.

well, you could do a couple of things. you could take sick animals to the vet, the only person that's really qualified to diagnose and prescribe treatment to your chameleon. and you could read a good care sheet and compare it to what you did. i have a detailed care sheet on my site.

If so he could have been sick before you got him.
How long did you have him before he died?
Keeping both eyes closed could be from dehydration or a vitamin deficiency or it could be from any number of illnesses.
It could also be from over supplementation of vitamins or calcium.
Read the vet topics article on www.chameleonjournals.com
especially the one about calcium and D3 (it warns against oversupplementation)
Also read the one about hydration.
Good luck with your next chameleon.
