Tiles as substrate?

bruce_y Dec 06, 2007 01:19 PM

Hey all, I have heard people recommend unglazed tiles as a substrate. Do you lay paper towels down first, then prop the tiles up so that the geckos sneak underneath the tiles? Or do you just line the bottom of the tank with the tiles and place hides on top?

If you line the bottom of the tank with tiles, it seems that the tiles would prevent sufficient heat from coming through since the UTH is under both glass and tiles. Also, wouldn't the hides slide everywhere?

If you prop the tiles up so that the leo sneaks underneath, what type of glue is recommended?

Any pics of tiles?

Thanks!!

I have the UTH directly under the tile. Tile is a great for keeping the heat so you should have no issues with that. I wouldnt recommend propping them up as one false move and they will come crashing down on the Leo. I dont use paper towels as the tile is easy to clean each night. Ever since i changed to tile my Leo has thrived and loves laying out flat on the tile above the UTH.

exactly as seen here. Tiles are great. They actually hold heat from the UTH and can get quite hot. Glazed and unglazed work fine. Just make sure if you use glazed that it is a baked on glaze and not a sprayed on. Terra cotta look great and the thickness of them really heats well. Just watch the heat they hold it well and can actually cook like a heat rock.
