Some more pics for Harlin

JaredHorenstein Dec 06, 2007 05:03 PM

Harlin......here are a few other pics taken with my Canon 5D for some examples of the quality and range they can handle. I personally think that Canon's capture a broader range of color than most other DSLR's. . . and with the full frame image sensor the images speak for themselves.

Canon's ROCK....but it's more about the person behind the glass!!!

Jared,

Very nice shots, I particularly like shot #3. Great use of DOF and framing; what lense are you shooting? If I had to guess I’d say something along the lines of a 70-200mm f2.8?

JaredHorenstein Dec 06, 2007 07:16 PM

They were all shot with a 70-200 IS L 2.8

Love that lens!

Haha, thank you. I’m trying to pick one of those up by the spring/summer. I just have to stop buying snakes, or maybe sell more offspring.

That is certainly one of the best pieces of glass Canon makes, enjoy it.

Jared,
Hey thanks buddy!

I enjoyed the photos....I am a sucker for raptor photos...love the Osprey. That last photo with the Peacock is very nice!
I also love how everything in the Gator Pic is focused clearly.

You guys have won me over. CANON IT IS!
Now I know who I'm gonna have to call when it comes time to drop a little dough on a new camera.
Never hurts to seek advice from THOSE who KNOWS.
You and Matt really do take some nice photos.
I appreciate the advice from both of you.
Thank again
Your friend,
Harlin

Harlin,

If you’re looking for a “cheaper” camera, I’d consider any of Canon’s 1.6x crop bodies (20D, 30D, 40, 400D, etc). The full frame sensors (5D, 1D Mark’s) are very nice, however they are more $ for someone starting out and you’ll likely be impressed with the 1.6x crop quality. Here is a shot I took of a hawk with a Canon 400D w/the kit 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 (this lense is considered poor quality at best by most photographers). This is straight out of the box, just manual settings. Just a thought, best luck with your search.

NICE!!!

I had to do a double take on the photo....I was looking for jesses on the tarsus of that hawk. Didn't see any!

Was that a staged photo? Or were you really that lucky....in the right place at the right time?

I once watched a beautiful Peregrine bust a feral pigeon in mid-air. I saw Kestrel snag a Hummingbird which was mobbing the Kestrel. I have watched plenty of Osprey lifting trout out of some beautiful Colorado Lakes....

Lots of photographic opportunities.
But I have never had the camera in my hand at the time the interesting stuff was happening.
That is a GREAT photo. Thank you for the info and a chance to see one of your BEST pics.

I used to fly a Red Tail and a Kestrel years ago.
In Colorado those are the only two raptors that a novice falconer is allowed to begin working with.
But it took too much of my time...I was in school and had a "real" job back then....
Sometimes I wish I never took "break" from it.

It would have been nice to graduate to General Falconer...and finally to Master Falconer....then you get to play with the REAL birds!

But raptors require daily exercise and a LOT more maintainance than SEVERAL racks of snakes. Your photo brought back a lot of fun memories. Thank you again.

ps. I bred some A. lubricus about 8 yrs ago. Aspidelaps are certainly an addictive species to keep!
I can truly relate to your screen name. Take care.
You are welcome to call me anytime. 970-245-7611 or 970-255-9255

Harlin,

Thanks for the compliment, glad you liked the photo. That photo was completely un-staged. I took it at a local park about a month ago, complete and total luck. I’m rather uneducated on birds of prey, however I do find them quiet fascinating.

Aspidelaps certainly are a fun species! They have all that Elapid attitude in a tiny package. I recently got out of venomous, but their memory is still fresh.

I’ll shoot you an email or call sometime; I always love to talk animals/photography.

Best regards,
Evan O’Donnell

Hey Evan,

I look forward to chatting with you.

I bet you were shocked to see that hawk incident.

...but not nearly as shocked as the squirrel!

Talk to you soon.
Harlin

Jared, great pictures! Where did you go to get so close? I use a Nikon D70s. It has more power than I know how to use.
