leo feces question

petethepelican Aug 24, 2003 11:36 PM

I was playing with my leo, when all of a sudden he just went all over my couch. How often do they have to do their business? and i also think he's sick. It was VERY long, and very runny poo. It also had some yellow, and some white on it. I think i've been giving him a little too much calcium, but for the past 2 days i haven't given him any calcium. Would giving him too much calcium make his poo like that? or is it something else? And you know how leo's have little bumps all over their skin? well every now and then there is a red one. Do you guys haev that or is my leo sick?

Witht he poop being long and runnier it depends on what it is eating. When the leos eat foods with higher fat content like silkworms, waxworms, and butterworms. There feces do become a tad bit more watery and longer. If they are just eating crix and mealies well u might want to look intoa vet trip. How long has it been like this. With the bumps beig red, it tends to be normal espcially if your leo has tang to it also. Sometimes leos use the restroom when scared od excited also.

There are three parts to the poop, since they sort of poop and pee at the same time. The actual brown stuff, a smaller white chunk, and liquid.

oh ok, well hes been on crickets only so far. I've had my leo for 4 days, and i've been handling him everyday for about 5 minutes, is that too much? soemtimes there are some folds of skin underneat my leo. Should they be there? and I read on another site that their feces should not smell bad (even though this makes no sense) is that right?

I wouldn’t worry too much. Everything you have described sounds normal to me. My very first leo pooped on me the second day I had him. They will go pretty regularly if they are eating well. Folds are ok, but leftover shed is not. And yes their feces smell bad, some worse then others. Good luck and let us know if you have more questions!

Tx alot! One more question...I've had him for 4 days, and i've been handling him every day for about 5 minutes. The first 2 days, he was extremely active....Now i barely see him, even when there is barely any light out. Am I stressing him out too much? Can i just wait till he calms down, and just stick my hand in for 5 minutes everyday so he knows that im not a threat?

That does seem like a lot of handling for a leo that you just got. I would give him at least a week for him to get used to his new surroundings. He'll feel secure when he knows he has a reliable hiding spot, food available, etc. Then you can start handling him. I usually don't start handling my leos until they come out on their own, and even then, I won't pick up their hiding spot to get them to come out.

So can i just drape a towel over his viv, and leave him alone for about 1 week to calm down, and then start stickign my hand in for 5 minutes a day, or is he stressed for life, and he'll always hide now? also, do most ur guys' leos that know you really well come out during the day to see you?

xelda Aug 25, 2003 09:10 PM

Don't drape a towel over his vivarium. He still needs the light to tell night from day. Some leos tend to be more shy than others, but you just have to be patient and leave him alone. If you want your leo to come out when you approach the tank, it helps to feed him at the same time every night.

Yeah, I do catch my leos sleeping out in the open during the day. They don't do it all the time. I'm especially happy that Rosie (one of my females) does it, because she was the one that hid all the time when I first got her.

My leos wait for me to feed them every night, and just a few days ago, I stuck my hand in while one of them was sleeping. He licked my hand and then went back to sleep.

OK thanks alot! His Viv is in the living room, so there is usually lights on in the room almost until 11:00 at night, so will this be a problem for him to tell between night and day?
