reflectix for keeping heat out?

cee4 Dec 07, 2007 01:31 PM

I know that it works to make a room or cage warmer but would it work on walls to keep the heat out in summer?
I have a half finished attic it stays about 40 in winter unheated and gets above 100 in the summer. This room is large with slanted walls(already finished).I dont think there is much insulation in the walls at all. There is also one skylight window and a ceiling fan.No heat or air conditioning up there either.
Any hope for this room as a reptile room?
Im poor so cheap and efficient is the only way I can go.I may just be dreaming anyway...

This does work. When I used it to insulate a storage room in the back of an uninsulated garage that room stayed cooler than the rest of the garage during the summer. However, the garage did not get that hot to begin with so I can't say for sure it will work in your situation.

If you try this make sure the the area of the room is ventilated as I have heard use of a radiant barrier can cause overheating.

As I have said before, I have called customer service at Reflectix and received good advice. Worth a try.

When you say overheating do you mean the ambient air temp in the room or the walls?
I guess Im under the impression that reflectix works by reflecting heat.Point the foil out and it reflects the heat away from the room.Point the foil in and it keeps the heat inside the room.
Ive never seen this stuff isnt it like bubblewrap with foil on one side?

Sorry, I mean the roof and shingles overheat because the heat is reflected back instead of radiating into the attic space.

Reflectix looks like bubble wrap with foil on both sides.

Thanks so much. This sounds too scary to try.I live in a very old house and I dont need the added stress of worrying about a fire in the roof.I guess I got to wait till the older kids move out to get a reptile room. And since they are 22 and 19 it shouldnt be too long. But Im not getting any younger..
