Reptile Vet. School...?

uros702 Aug 24, 2003 11:48 PM

Hey!

My boyfriend and I have been searching our asses off to try to find a college that specializes in Reptile vet. medicine. Will he have to take 4 yrs of pre-vet then 4 yrs. at a Vet school and then go into specialized details. What he really wants to do is become a Reptile Vet for a major zoo, is this possible?

Someone please help us!!!

Thanks,
Mari

Hi Mari,
Is your boyfriend in college right now? If not, he should choose an undergraduate program at the same school as the vet school he wants to attend, it usually helps with admission. Not many vet schools have a large reptile section, he may have to settle with a nice exotics program. If he wants to be a vet at a zoo lthe exotic concentration will help because many programs want a vet that can treat a variety of animals. If he wants to specialize in herps he may want to attend graduate school and get his Master's before or after vet school, this can make him appealing to potential employers. Louisiana State University vet school has a very good wildlife program, but they are geared towaard raptors (birds of prey). If you find a school that has a good herp program let me know! Good luck!

LSU has the best Reptile Medicine program in the Nation in my opinion. Mark Mitchell may not be the best instructor in the world, but he cares about the students and seems to care about reptiles. He's a good person to get under the wing of.
