65 F at night ?

HerpLover95 Dec 07, 2007 07:42 PM

Hello,
I never have a problem heating the snake cages except in the winter. Our house is at around 64 at night and even with the top of the cage covered it's cold on the cool side. I have a UTH on the warm side and an inferred light that goes on every other our after 8:00. Even with these heating elements both of the snakes stay on the cool side of the cage that is at 65. Is this temperature ok? Im always paranoid in the winter that it's too cold for them and they will get an resperitory infection. Thanks!

I feel that 65 is OK at night on the cool side. As long as the warm side is at least in the mid 70's. If your snakes are getting a "natural" photoperiod, this level of seasonal cooling should also be natural. Don't be surprised if they prefer smaller meals, less often during these shorter, cooler days.

If the snake wanted to be warmer couldnt it just go to the warm side?

My corn stays on the 65 degree end all the time now. He's got an area in the low 70s and an area in the mid 80s. Even after I feed him I only see him in the 65 degree area. No problems to report so far...

My cage is set up the same way. There's a hide on the warm side (Left) a hide in the middle and a hide on the cool side. Sometimes after she eats she'll spend a day on the warm side. There havent been any problems in the 2 years I've had her but it was just getting me worried. Thanks everyone!

That seems kinda strange. I didn't know corns could digest at 65*F. When I turn my room temp down to 65*, that's when I start brumating my corns/Emory's. Maybe there's some reason he won't go into the warmer areas?

As long as they have the option to be warmer they are fine. They know what the6y want and just like people they all have their own temperature preferences. I could wear shorts when it is 25 outside and my fiance is cold at 72.... My bp hardly ever goes on her warm side and it is only about 83ish. If they stop eating then don't feed for an additional 2 weeks and go ahead and brumate them...IMO

That's what I was going to do a couple of weeks ago. The amel stopped eating because I had accidentaly put the UTH's on the same timer as the lights. SHe stopped eating on halloween and then started back up 3 weeks ago. If she didnt eat within a month I was just going to brumate her.

I guess that's what you wind up with in both your examples!

Which is fine....as long as you can find them & warm them back up again. :D
