What do you do when you go away ?

justinmatthew Dec 08, 2007 02:35 PM

If your out of town for say a weekend or few days what do you do with your snakes? I often have to go out of town for 2 or say three days, occasionaly four and I just leave my snakes, which are in racks, as is. Before I go I check all the temps, make sure those are and have been recently consisted, make sure none of my snakes will need to feed in the next few days, and make sure they all have fresh water. Is this irresponsible? Should I have someone check in on them? I haven't ever had a problem but I wanted to see what everyone else does when they are gone for a short few days, not really speaking of long term absences. Thanks in advance.

Way back when I used lamp dimmers only to control heating, leaving could be problematic if we had a hot day or two while I was gone.

My advice is to use a thermostat (or however many you need) to make darn sure overheating will not happen. Other than that, you should be fine.

Oh, larger cages are great, since the snake can get away from the heater if something should go wrong. Darn sweaterboxes leave snakes trapped, so careful control is a must.

Have done it for a few days & for a full week many times. My biggest concern is usually the water. What if they poop in it, spill it, etc. I often put an extra bowl in most of the tanks. I used to feed 'em all right before. Now I only feed the little ones. I'd rather the big ones miss a feeding than increase the chances of filthy water for a week. One of the things I really like about snakes is you CAN walk away from them for a few days and they're OK.

Thanks for the response guys. I always get a bit nervous but never hve had a problem. I use thermostats so the temps are pretty consistent. But yeah your right about that being the great things about snakes.

I just fill the water and leave. Have left em for a week before.
