popping mex-mex

theserpenteer Dec 08, 2007 09:48 PM

I have experience popping larger colubrids like Hondurans, and pythons. But Mex-mex babies are much smaller than I am used to and I'm having a problem getting any of the 10 that just hatched to display prominent hemipenes. I know they have shorter ones than the other species to begin with.

I can get them to pop, but sometimes it looks more like the scent gland to me, leading me to believe female. Other times I get the same size object to evert, but it lookes red like a hemipene, but it's no larger than the comparable "scent gland" on the others.

Does this sound right, and I'm right to believe the red color is the hemipene, despite the scent glands appearing the same size?

I would probe to be sure, or find someone who could do it for me, once I brought 32 snakes to my vet for the one office visit fee when I learned how to probe! he wanted to see the collection and digs snakes so it was a one time deal that I scored well on!

they'll have to grow a little before probing. These should definitely be popped at this size.
