First breeding, should I expect eggs?

brianray Dec 09, 2007 01:10 AM

My female is getting ready to shed for the first time in 3 months. My male and female have locked up about 7 times since September 20. She hasn't eaten more than a few small rats since then.

I'm not sure if I should fire up the incubator or if it's just a normal shed because they were just locked up yesterday.

Thanks for any input.

If you had seven solid hookups, I'd be very optomistic if I were you. I myself start to get a very good feeling after three hookups. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I got a nice 100% fertile clutch earlier this year after a single copulation (the pair was only together a few hours on a single day). I wouldn't worry, they will continue to copulate right up to ovulation.

Have you felt for follicular development?

I tried but I don't really know what I'm looking for.

I don't believe the number of "lock ups" is a good way to try and judge when a female will drop. Has she ovulated? If you aren't sure, she probably hasn't! My male started with the girls around Thanksgiving, and it is doubtful any of my girls will start dropping until after March!
