Anyone Try Alfalfa Pellets?

ross_rutner Dec 09, 2007 04:13 AM

I was at my local feed and bedding place, when I saw they were selling Alfalfa cubes for far cheaper than the rodent diet. I'm curious if anyone has or currently uses them and what their results were or are. The cost is about 5X cheaper per pound.

Thanks in advance.

I use the pellets as a substrate for my ASF and they do eat it from time to time. It doesn't realy hold much in the way of protine for regular rats and mice though. If your looking to feed on the cheap, I use a good puppy chow mixed with the 'el cheapo cheerieos (both reg and honny)and unsalted sunflower seeds. I do buy treats now and then but that's only because I am a big softy and I feel bad that they will be food one day.

It isn't digestible enough for rodents. Rabbits, guinea pigs, ruminants....fine. Rats and mice won't eat them or get much from nibbling them. For bedding they work fine as long as you watch they don't start molding in corners.

My rodents would rather eat each other then alf alfa pellets. My rabbits don't really like them either.

Rat's cannot digest alfalfa. Any brand's of food for rats that contain alfalfa is crap. Kaytee, oxford, those are the worst diets. Mazuri, Harlan and a few others are excellent choices. The only hay product I let my animals eat is Timothy hay for my pregnant girls as a treat. It's sweet and they love it.
