OT: Feeling blue...

natsamjosh Dec 09, 2007 06:04 PM

Didn't plan on taking any pics today, but the weather was unreal. Took the little guy out for some sun since he is feeling a bit blue.

We got into a staring contest...

His belly turned mostly blue

Checking out the neighbors...

Head shot...

Thanks for looking,
Ed

Is the belly turning blue a result of being close to shed or do they lose the red pigment after a certain age? Forgive the basic question but I am only vaguely familliar with indigo's and as such no next to nothing about them. Except of course that they look really cool lol.

Thanks. I'm still learning myself, so every question is a good one.

The blue in the pics is mostly due to being close to shed. Normally, though, his belly on his lower half is a more of a translucent, glassy gray/blue. Upper half is reddish. I honestly have no idea what to expect regarding the red pigmentation. The breeder from whom I got him said it's unpredictable, since Dad had a 1/2 red face and some belly red, but I think Mom was all black. I'm hoping the diet I'm feeding him now (goldfish and anoles) will actually improve his red color, but that might be wishful thinking.

I see you have some corn snakes. Any idea if corn snake breeders use any type of diet and/or supplementation to improve the red/orange color???? Regardless, I'd love to see some pics if you have any!

Thanks,
Ed

Thanks for the info. I'll prolly get a picture montage put together in a few weeks after graduation and Christmas. A friend of mine has a nice digital SLR with some Really nice macro lenses so we should be able to get some good shots at that time.

As far as I know no one is really doing diet color work with corns but that could be either because it may have been done before or simply because of the existing range of color already present just from genetics.

One thing really cool about Indigo's is: You can feed one and clean out that same meal out the other end, before you leave the room!

natsamjosh Dec 10, 2007 06:55 AM

Ah, my favorite topic!

I am experimenting with my indy's diet, because it seems odd to me that the indigo snake would be the only species in the animal kingdom for which frequent, foul-smelling, projectile diarrhea is considered normal.

So I started out feeding him only mice, and like everyone said, he was shooting a$$ cannons all over the place, including high up on the glass sliding doors. It was disgusting, and I had to clean the cage constantly.

About a month ago I switched him to lizards and goldfish, and so far the change has been dramatic - much less frequency, normal looking poop, and not one cannon yet!

Thanks,
Ed

First...very very very nice Indigo...love it...

Well I have heard stories about indigo's and I keep quite a few snakes and my pine snakes...especially the Black Pines have the same rep...NOT as putrid as the Indigo's...Black Pines being second runners up...If I feed them chicks they crap out the feet...now talk about running right thru them...and when I use chicks I know when they go from three rooms away ...all doors closed...it's just plain nasty...but my Brazilian aint no slouch either...lol...

POO...

BLUE...

... are you chopping the chicks' heads off?? You should
be chopping their feet off!

Thanks for the compliment. It would be neat to see
my indigo next to your awesome leucistic rat snake (I can
hear Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder in the background...)
That thing is amazing.

that head happened ...to be a coincidence...I didn't rip is head off...although it would not bother me to do so. I get a few with broken heads straight out of the bag ever time I order...usually at least two out of 25 have broken off heads...

The only snakes I have that crap out the feet are my pine snakes (Black and Northern). All my other ophidians completely digest the chicks...fast metabolism causes the pines to crap out the feet...and they do not always do so...chicks makes their feces toxic lol

Thanks. Hard to compete with Daisy in the looks department, so this is a great compliment.
