zeroto4legs Dec 09, 2007 11:21 PM

im gog to be going to the whiteplains show in jan, and i am deciding on what my next herp should be.
the two choice im lookign are either western hognose snake or a jungle carpet python.
im going to be getting a baby of which ever i chose, probly around 2-5 months old, just to make sure its feeding and growing.
i want smething that either is a desert or an aboral snake thats how i came up with the two choices,
i was wondering either way im going to be building a cage for the adult i pick, i was wondering could an adult male jcp be housed in a cage thats 36x24x24?
also how aboral are the jcp, i want somethign thats like close to a gtp, but that i can hold and will look good as a pet/ display animal.

thanks for your help

i have 2 jcp's they r both young i believe 2months and really dont like bein handled my male doesnt hide and lives in the branches /vines in his cage never seen him out of them. the female only comes out from her hide at night she is much calmer.these arnt my first jcps, and in my experiencethey dont calm down til six months but u have to keep handling them while they r young for short periods of time i only hold mine for cleaning once a week for about ten minutes and once more during the week for the same period .once they calm down they are amazing beautifal snakes and easy to keep. i would say those dimension would be absolute minimum when i had my adult he was in a 4x3x3

I have only had my JCP for about two months now, but she is a great snake. She is only 5 months and is completely tame, no strikes in over a month now. She calmed down very quickly with gentle consistent handling. She does spend most of her time in her hide and only comes out during the evening/night to explore. From what I have heard it can go either way, hiding all day or spending all day in the branches/leaves. My opinion is it varies from snake to snake.

I'd say either snake you pick you're going to be a winner. Good luck deciding and finding a good one.

They are two completely different snakes! The only thing they have in common is that they are snakes!

Western Hognose are great little snakes but they are small, but have great personality. They have are mildly poisonous with rear facing fang, but I don’t personally know anyone who has been bitten. They come in an A couple different verities like albino, but I like the common because they look like vipers. They don’t look as cool in a display, but that’s preference.

Carpets come in so many different varieties; you have Jungles, Coastal, Irian Jayas, Centralian, and Diamonds… You can get them in different combinations (but a lot of people are against that sort of thing) and Jags are very cool also (look them up). They make great display animals. The only bad thing is they (some to most) like to bite when they are young, but don’t be discouraged, most get over it, it has more to do with you, (in the long run) than the snake. The different types get to be different sizes so do your homework.

Whatever you get, remember you will have this animal for a LONG time, so be picky, and spend more for quality and maybe something special. DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE you buy!

Enjoy the experience and read posts on this site (and others) for advice.

Good luck! I don’t know why you don’t just get both.
