That's an outstanding animal Doug, super nice and clean! Did you produce that one yourself?

Thanks Nathan!,..I'd really like to take the credit for producing her, but I got her from Marc Bailey, he has some VERY outstanding animals!.....needless to say, she was plenty good enough to join my collection!..LOL, glad you like her too.

Dude!,...that is one richly colored Honduran you posted.
that is sweet!.......did you snap the shot just after a meal?, I noticed the lower jaw looks a little out of alignment!..LOL

Hope you enjoyed yourself at that party you went to this weekend!

best regards Nate!, ~Doug

Thanks for the reply Doug. Marc Bailey does have some really nice animals and I am sure that ghost will continue to be a knockout as it ages.
The Honduran in the picture is a nice tangerine hypo het anery I picked up from my good friend Dave Doherty a few years ago. I have known, worked with and lived next to him for several years. Not only has he been a great mentor to me personally, I have been able to get some awesome animals from him as well. About the pic though, her jaw was a little out of alignment as you noticed. She didn't appreciate me getting that close for a picture and tried to give me a little kiss on the cheek...LOL.
I did have a good time at the party, (maybe a little too much) thanks for asking.

DMong Dec 10, 2007 12:07 PM

Nathan,....How did you manage living right next to Dave?.....
that's pretty dang handy!..LOL,....If you get a chance, could you ask him if he remembers what part of Honduras his anery import came from back in 1991?....tell him I got some of Brian Barczyk's anery/het pairs not long after he produced some.

I'll bet you get some sweet picks of some of his clutches, as well as some great deals!,...what could be better?

I'll dig up a pic of the anery I got from Brian B. years back, it was SUPER-CLEAN as a hatchling, and looks pretty darn good now as an adult anery.

take care buddy!, ~Doug

it looks washed out and almost colorless. what makes this phase good? don't get me wrong, i love hondurans. regards, rusty. p.s.: i'm assuming your answers will be, "like you said rusty, you don't understand."

I've been in this hobby just long enough to learn that everyone has different likes and dislikes. That is what makes this hobby fun! Take me, I like albinos and ghosts, whereas some people like normal phases only. To each his own I'd say.

Well, to be honest, it's just as you said at the end of your own post.

The whole idea of combining the two genetic traits of hypomelanism, and anerythrism is to hopefully produce an animal with absolutely ZERO black tipping, reduced black bands, and a generally more washed out appearance, leaving only a light pastel coloration. Fact is, most people(including me) think the one pictured is a VERY exceptional example of the "ghost" morph, and most ghost breeders would be thrilled to produce ghosts that looked this nice. Ghosts aren't supposed to be the most colorful Honduran morph,.....but nice examples are just as the name
"ghost" implies,......very reduced in color.

here are two comparison examples of,...as you said, "what makes this phase good"......

okay, i see the difference. i just don't understand the appeal. is there a market/demand for this morph? they don't seem to be selling well in the classifieds. i want to know if i should add this morph to my collection. are there breeding projects that require the gohst gene to make something else that people project will be special/beautiful? thanks, rusty

Sunherp Dec 12, 2007 09:25 AM

The ghost morph itself is coveted. Although it may looked "washed out", that's the whole point. There are also ghost cornsnakes and ghost ball pythons. Both are coveted morphs due to their divergence from the norm. The same applies to honduran milk snakes.

They may not be appealing to you, but others are fascinated to see the layering of pigments and genetic mutations involved with creating morphs. As Ryan said, one of the great things about this hobby is that there is something for everyone - to each his own.

Hope this helps

Yep, I agree with Cole and Ryan. Myself, I prefer the ghost morph over the snow morph. The snow morph is kinda a dead end in the way they look. I know they can have some different shades etc.. but a snow is a snow is a snow etc.... Ghosts get better every generation and the patterns can be clearly seen.

rustduggler Dec 12, 2007 12:12 PM

i agree with your opinion that ghosts are better than snows. better because they have more color than snows. which is why i feel that ghosts are less appealing than normals, hypos, etc. i feel that the two things that make hundurans appealing are color and pattern. take away either and you lose characteristics that probably attracted most of us to them in the first place. everything else is a novelty. in time the novelty wears off of most things. these are my views and opinions. rusty

DMong Dec 12, 2007 04:22 PM

Okay,.........so don't own a ghost!,.......nobody's saying you HAVE to like them........ Stay with the other more "colorful" ones you mentioned.

a friend of mine saw this thread and told me if i wanted, he would give me a ghostfor free. i told him i'd rather buy a normal or a hypo. he said that he has sold all of his normals and hypos, but has several ghosts left as they didn't sell well at all at the shows this year. i'm going to take it to see if it will grow on me. i'll let you know if my opinion changes. i'll be picking it up this weekend. rusty. p.s. i wonder if i post message in the tree python forum that i dislike canary yellow chondro pythons, will someone just give me one of those too? i'd really like that.

shannon brown Dec 12, 2007 05:23 PM

I am sure he/she will grow on you. They are real nice looking when they are in your hands.

DMong Dec 12, 2007 08:13 PM

Yeah!,....that IS pretty funny!..LOL

I would like to get some Todos Santos Island Kingsnakes for claiming they aren't so colorful as well!...LOL

Keep in mind though, there are MANY ghosts out there that are very tipped and dirty looking with very dark bands. These are less desirable and much more common. Some are even very hard to distinguish from an anerythristic animal. Those types of mediocre animals are a dime a dozen. Individuals like the one Shannon posted below, and the one I first posted are very hard to come by, all ghosts are NOT created equal! there are a lot of crappy ghosts I wouldn't give two cents for. Exceptional ones are far between!

Please post us a pic of the one he gives you.

best regards, ~Doug

..........

rustduggler Dec 16, 2007 04:08 PM

well, i saw the ghosts today and although they were quality ghosts with very little tipping, i decided not to take one. they just don't appeal to me. I thought i would be better off putting my cage space, food, and effort toward something more of my liking. i still like hudurans, though. Rusty
